The single was taken from her second album (to be released, Spring 2012), 'Master of My Make Believe.' We drew frame-by-frame animation digitally to accent Santigold and her dancers' movements.

I just finished 3 CD covers for a new, environmentally friendly (digital download only) self-hypnosis CD set presented by Harley Sears, CH. It is presented by Harley, and paired with ambient music by Keanan Duffty. The set includes sessions on reducing stress, stopping smoking, and losing weight.

I used rich, textural landscapes to convey an ethereal and relaxing setting. Instead of the topic of the cd being displayed explicitly, dreamy landscapes allude to the relaxed hypnotic state of the listener. You can purchase the mp3s, as well as gift certificates for one-on-one sessions at his Big Cartel store.

–My original 10 questions for experimentation:

1. How can I create believable (...or, unbelievable!) depth in a small, constructed space?

2. What can I do with lighting to change the way that type appears in the space?

3. What sort of material would create crisp, pure letterforms that are highly legible, even amongst other elements in a pre-fabricated environment?

4. How can I alter a person's perception of dimension, using small letterforms in space?

5. What if there were letterforms that existed not only in the 3D environment (sculptural), but also in the 2D space (printed, etc.) in that environment?

6. How can I best fabricate type with meaning that directly relates to the small environment that I will be creating? (i.e. Landscape = Environmental concerns/Human Ecology)

7. What kind of materials will fit best in the constructed environment, or would be best used to clarify the meaning of my content?

8. What can Photoshop do to enhance my experiments formally after they have been constructed and photographed? Can digital alteration manage to make my constructions believable and strangely realistic in formality?

9. How could I control lighting within the actual letterforms, in addition to the overall scene that I will be constructing?

10. What happens when I work with my own fabricated letterforms from scratch, as opposed to when I use a typeface to base my letterform constructions on?

- raise interesting and sustainable questions about the fundamental aspects of typographic form. how well did you do this?

Fairly well. I think that I definitely raised interesting questions and maintained a good level of discovery. I didn't just answer my question once, I created new experiments every time I set to work on my project.

- what is the quality and potential of the questions you asked? were the results interesting? was the pursuit passionate? what was learned?

The quality of the questions asked were not terrifically original, but my interest and development came from the appreciation of so many different things; I had to think of all of the processes and tasks that I could accomplish using materials that I could afford or borrow.

The results were very interesting, but certainly could have been a deeper study of typographic form at its roots. The pursuit was quite passionate, because I had this vivid idea in my head for this, I really wish that I could have explored for a longer period, or gone a little bit more wild with this. (Budget was an issue, of course.) I think I created a sufficient amount considering the time that we were allotted.

- apply individual visual / verbal perspectives to projects through writing, research, and content development at a basic level. how much of your perspective is evident in this work? how much does your blog writing reflect opinions you are forming about your work?

My blog posts for my type experiment assignment often showcased environmental studies or human ecology topics, quotes, imagery, and ideas. I think a great deal of my perspective is evident in the work because I gave the work meaning, in an environmental awareness capacity.

- integrate accumulated typographic knowledge with form, image, sequence and narrative. how well have you built upon what you already know about form-making, type & image, storytelling, etc. in this work? does this look like type IV-level work?

I have built a fairly interesting narrative and the storytelling is interesting, I feel. ...DOES it look like Type IV level work? I cannot say.

I made a type experiment out of a magazine clipping spray-mounted to a piece of bristol board. it stood in front of a background behind it in my diorama box.

The New York Times: 'THE ARTS' feat. the opera 'Attila'

This really inspired me today. I find it laying out on the counter at the filling station when I was enjoying a mocha and turkey wrap this afternoon.

It sparked my interest because of its strange use of space in the stage set. The man in the upper left-hand corner (in the glowing circle cut into the foliage) who is wearing black is in a very strange constructed space above the actors on the main stage. It really plays with depth and it gave me some great ideas about how to push depth in my experimental type work. (And in my work in general for that matter.)

The newest one at the bottom of this post is the coolest/creepiest. Red things hitting trees rapidly? Small house, dog barking silently, creepy blonde character. Then, at the end, the berries are revealed in front of the girl on strings. (Shown above.)

There have been a handful of strange, dark, viral videos from a youtube user named iamamiwhoami that are baffling everyone. Whomever they are, they have created quite a stir in the music/blog/internet community. Publicist's/Bloggers receive them in messages/e-mails or something, and they are submitted anonymously, as far as the public knows. Everyone has guessed numerous bands, (The Knife, Goldfrapp, Joanna Newsom, The Golden Filter, MGMT, and even Christina Aguilera? Wtf. I don't think any of these make sense. I think perhaps it looks a bit like something that Fever Ray would create, but in a recent interview, I read that she has a COMPLETELY different direction for her next musical endeavor... So, improbable.)

Anyway, regardless of who they are, these videos are excellent. They are cryptic, dark, set in nature, featuring a blonde girl who likes to lay in water, have black paint on her face, perform in a super-captivating manner and produce super-trippy results. Other highlights include: The mysterious blonde woman licking bark, black labrador puppies, a small house, strawberries on strings, arms and legs protruding from trees and swinging to the beat, and trees oozing with white fluid. Very strange, VERY beautiful.

TYPE IV: NON-DESIGNER/ARTIST BIO - Matthew Albanese

Matthew Albanese creates hyper-realistic, miniature, scale-model scenes and landscapes that are very poetic in nature and meticulous in detail. He creates incredibly dynamic and realistic perspectives by setting up photographs from specific angles to alter the viewers perception of the constructed scene. He uses photographic techniques including, scale, depth of field, white balance and lighting to completely change the appearance of his scenes and the materials that they are constructed from. Albanese often takes up to two months to create the surreal, other-worldy scenes. Albanese admits that there is a lot of trial and error in his work. Like myself, he is experimenting, but with intense control over form and detail.

Featuring work by some 14 artists and collaboratives, Mythmakers embodies the youthful, make-your-own-fun, do-it-yourself-and-together spirit of the Kansas City art scene. Organized by artist/curator Megan Mantia, the densely packed exhibition will showcase a cross-section of emerging artists who place themselves at the center of their work, constructing mythic personas and fantasy narratives that fuse autobiographical aspects with illusions of grandeur, typically with a sizeable dose of humor thrown in as well.

While expressed through diverse media and formats, this personal mythmaking frequently involves performative elements, which this exhibition will emphasize. Opening night will feature “scheduled activations of personalities and installations,” says Mantia, who also notes that the collaborative nature of many of these artists’ work will encourage audience participation.

“These artists offer sharp pop-culture commentary, and are proud of their Midwestern origins, writes Mantia, who is herself a member of Rah! Booty, Whoop Dee Doo, and Ssion. “They start with something personal, and twist it until even the oddest attribute is admirable and accessible. Most distinctively, this art takes fantasy and fabricates it for interaction -- each artist involves the community in their work, and lavishes thought and attention on their potential audience. I'm not gonna lie, I love this song. It's really disco and amazing. ...And really weird.

Now, the "She Wolf" culture has gotten out of hand in a REALLY INCREDIBLE way. Some guy created this in his own home, and it's pretty amazing. First, watch the original "She Wolf" video by Shakira... Then, watch the "He Wolf" video by 'skwrrelhunter' (below). The time and dedication, the choreography, the film and sound relationship; every detail is considered. AH-MAZING.

Siggi Eggertsson

Siggi Eggertson is an illustrator from Berlin who is part of the Big Active design group based out of the UK. He demonstrates aaah-mazing form-making that is deeply rooted in pattern. His work is often a commentary on pop culture, and redefines shape and form with his characteristic use of rounded forms that are often scale-like in appearance. He has an incredible sense of how to represent depth, even using an arrangement of very similar forms. Eggertson also uses an interesting and fresh color palette that transcends the massive amount of super-saturated work that dominates design today.

I have loved this illustrator/designer for quite some time now and I have followed the work that he has produced as a part of the Big Active collective, but he seems to have just began to skim the surface of the motion graphic discipline.

PEGGY NOLAND

I am currently working with Peggy Noland on projects to promote her new line of polka-dot themed clothing. The project consists of print work like business cards/clothing hang-tags, postcards and posters, as well as web work like her myspace page and new website. When I started working on the business cards/hang-tags, I created a new identity for her where I filled in the counters of the 'p' and the 'd' at the beginning and end of her name so that it would not only function as a business card, but the filled counters could also act as a space where she could write the price and size of the garment. The filled counters also reference the polka-dot pattern that she used in her new line.

Peggy just traveled to Berlin to open what has been referred to as a "pop-up shop" (the interior shown in the photo above) in which she sold her clothing but was required to refer to it as an 'art project' because of its temporary nature. In a very tiny room (located in a friend's apartment building; her patrons had to enter through a small set of stairs leading up to a window that they had to climb into) she crafted an installation out of paper forming a red & white polka-dot pattern covering the space from floor to ceiling, and one small rack of her clothing hung along the back wall.

It's too bad that this guy doesn't host his videos on YouTube, but he is really incredible. Pablo Valbuena is a sculptor that works with augments physical, spatial geometry with virtual layers...

He could probably explain it better than I can:

"This project is focused on the temporary quality of space, investigating space-time not only as a three dimensional environment, but as space in transformation.
For this purpose two layers are produced that explore different aspects of the space-time reality. On the one hand the physical layer, which controls the real space and shapes the volumetric base that serves as support for the next level. The second level is a virtual projected layer that allows controlling the transformation and sequentiality of space-time.
The blending of both levels gives the impression of physical geometry suitable of being transformed. The orverlapping produces a three-dimensional space augmented by a transformable layer suitable to be controlled, resulting in the capacity through the installation of altering multiple dimensions of space-time.
These ideas come to life in an abstract and geometric envelope, enhanced with synesthetic audio elements and establishing a dialogue with the observer."

Miike Snow Pitchfork Review

So, the debut album by three producers who joined forces to form a seemingly powerful trio (according to the countless amazing remixes that I found on blogs EVERYWHERE), "falls short" according to Pitchfork. They gave their debut self-titled album "Miike Snow" (which is the strange name they chose for themselves, along with the silhouette of the infamous imaginary animal, the jackalope) a 5.0 rating, and an awful review. YIKES!

...Makes me sad.

It took a mix of motion-sensitive technology, time-lapse photography, live-action footage, and animation, over a three-month period to complete.

It has triangular prisms, glittery stars, stark contrast, and the video streams through an oval frame... I really couldn't have asked for anything cooler.

May I just say that this album is incredible... I really have been less-than-impressed by this seemingly-tasteless electronic production duo (reliant on outside vocalists) on previous albums. But 2009's "Junior" is pretty incredible. Robyn (artist from Norway who was big in America in the 90s with hits like "Show Me Love") lays down some vocals on one of the singles "The Girl and the Robot" and it is pretty wonderful. It's rolling disco/electro sound and powerful vocals contributed by Robyn make it a supersong.

Also, last but absolutely not least, Karin Dreijer Andersson (aka Fever Ray) from The Knife contributes to two tracks, "This Must Be It," and "Tricky Tricky."

Just give it a listen.
